Clinical Pharmacology

Argosulfan cream is a topical antibacterial drug that promotes healing of wounds (burns, trophic, purulent, etc.), provides effective protection of wounds against infection, relieves pain and burning sensation in the wound, reduces the time of treatment and preparation of the wound for skin grafts, in many cases leads to an improvement in condition that eliminates the need for transplantation.

The sulfanilamide - sulfathiazol, which is part of the cream, has a wide spectrum of antibacterial bacteriostatic action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Indications

  • Burns of varying degrees, of any nature (thermal, solar, chemical, electric current, radiation, etc.), frostbite.
  • Bedsores, trophic ulcers of the lower leg of various genesis (including chronic venous insufficiency, obliterating endarteritis, circulatory disorders in diabetes, erysipelas, etc.).
  • Purulent wounds, minor household injuries (cuts, abrasions).
  • Infected dermatitis, simple contact dermatitis, complicated impetigo, microbial eczema, streptostaphyloderma.

Composition

1 g of cream contains:

Active ingredient: Sulfadiazine silver salt 20 mg.

The foundation: up to 1 year

Main components: liquid paraffin; cetostearyl alcohol; petrolatum; sodium lauryl sulfate; glycerol; propyl hydroxybenzoate; methyl hydroxybenzoate; potassium hydrogen phosphate; sodium dihydrophosphate; water for injections.

Dosage and Administration

Topically, as an open method, and in the form of occlusive dressings.

After cleansing and surgical treatment, a preparation with a thickness of 2-3 mm is applied 2-3 times a day to the wound in compliance with the conditions of sterility. During treatment, the entire wound should be covered with cream. If part of the wound opens, you must additionally apply the cream. Occlusive dressing is possible, but not required.

The cream is applied until the wound is completely healed or until the skin is transplanted. In case of use of the drug for infected wounds, exudate may appear.

Before using the cream, it is necessary to wash the wound with an antiseptic.

The maximum daily dose is 25 g. The maximum duration of treatment is 60 days.

Adverse reactions

Skin allergic reactions. Sometimes irritation is possible, manifested by burning in the place of application of the cream. With prolonged use, changes in the blood may occur that are characteristic of systemic sulfonamides (for example, leukopenia), desquamative dermatitis.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity (including to other sulfonamides).
  • Congenital deficiency of glucose – 6-phosphate dehydrogenase.
  • Early childhood (newborns and babies up to 2 months, premature babies) due to the risk of developing nuclear jaundice.
  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy.
  • During the period of breastfeeding, the drug can be prescribed only if the burn surface does not exceed 20% of the body surface, and the therapeutic benefit for the mother is greater than the possible risk for the child.

Drug interactions

Not recommended for use with other topical medications. Folic acid and its structural analogues (for example, procaine) are able to weaken the antimicrobial action of sulfathiazole.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Not recommended for use during pregnancy. During the period of breastfeeding, the drug can be prescribed only if the burn surface does not exceed 20% of the body surface, and the therapeutic benefit for the mother is greater than the possible risk for the child.

Special instructions

With long-term treatment and with extensive wound surfaces, the level of sulfathiazole in the blood plasma should be monitored, especially in patients with diseases of the liver and kidneys.

Use caution when applying to shock patients with extensive burns because of the impossibility of collecting a full allergological history.

Argosulfan cream, applied topically, does not cause darkening of the skin and linen.

Does not limit the psychophysical ability, the ability to control vehicles and maintain machinery in motion.

Cases of overdose are not registered.
