Clinical Pharmacology

Antibacterial agent, sulfonamide derivative. Sulfadimethoxin has a long lasting effect when taken orally. The mechanism of action is associated with competitive antagonism with PABA and competitive inhibition of dihydropteroate synthetase, which leads to disruption of the synthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid, necessary for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines.

Indications

Infectious and inflammatory diseases caused by microorganisms susceptible to sulfadimethoxine, incl. angina, sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis, dysentery, inflammatory diseases of the biliary and urinary tract, erysipelas, wound infections, trachoma.

Dosage and Administration

Sulfadimethoxine Administered orally. Accept every 24 h: in the 1st day - 1-2 g, in the subsequent - 0.5-1 g / day; children - 25 mg / kg / day on the first day and 12.5 mg / kg / day - in the next.

Adverse reactions

From the side of the central nervous system: possible headache.

From the digestive system: dyspeptic symptoms, nausea, vomiting, cholestatic hepatitis.

Allergic reactions: skin rash, drug fever.

From the hemopoietic system: rarely - leukopenia, agranulocytosis.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, inhibition of bone marrow hematopoiesis, renal and / or liver failure, chronic heart failure, congenital deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, porphyria, azotemia, pregnancy.

Drug interactions

Sulfadimethoxine reduces the effectiveness of bactericidal antibiotics that act only on fissile microorganisms (including penicillins, cephalosporins).

Pregnancy and Lactation

Sulfadimethoxine is contraindicated for use in pregnancy.

Special instructions
