Clinical Pharmacology
Nystatin is a polyene antifungal antibiotic highly active against yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida. It has a fungicidal effect. The structure of the antibiotic has a large number of double bonds with a high tropism for the sterol structures of the cytoplasmic membrane of fungi, which contributes to the incorporation of the drug molecule into the cell membrane and the formation of a large number of channels through which the electrolytes are transported uncontrolled. An increase in osmolarity inside the cell leads to its death.
Indications
Nystatin ointment is used for candidiasis of the skin and mucous membranes.
Composition
1 g ointment contains:
Active substance: Nystatin 100,000 U; Excipients: anhydrous lanolin; petrolatum medical;
Nystatin is marketed under different brands and generic names, and comes in different dosage forms:
Brand name | Manufacturer | Country | Dosage form |
---|---|---|---|
Nystatin | Biochemist Saransk | Russia | ointment |
Nystatin | Biosynthesis | Russia | rectal suppositories |
Nystatin | Biosynthesis | Russia | ointment |

Dosage and Administration
Locally Apply a thin layer of ointment to the affected areas of the skin and mucous membranes 1–2 times a day, daily for 7–10 days. Can be combined with taking the drug inside.
Adverse reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sometimes fever, chills. Possible risk of spreading resistant forms of fungi (requires discontinuation of the drug).
Hypersensitivity.
Drug interactions
With the simultaneous use of nystatin with clotrimazole, the activity of the latter is reduced.
Pregnancy and Lactation
The appointment of Nystatin during pregnancy is possible if the intended benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Although the drug is absorbed in small quantities, it is not known whether it is excreted in breast milk, so if necessary, the appointment of Nystatin during lactation should decide whether to stop breastfeeding.
Special instructions
In cases of fungal diseases of the vagina, simultaneous treatment of the sexual partner is recommended. During treatment, sexual intercourse should be avoided.
Do not allow ointment to get into eyes. In case of accidental contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water.
Do not use the ointment for tuberculosis, viral skin lesions, as well as staphylococcal pyoderma.
